Since 1998, The Asian American Writers' Workshop has presented the highest literary honor for Asian American writers. Since the inception of the awards we have actively solicited entries to ensure that a comprehensive list of the year's fiction, poetry, and nonfiction titles by Asian American authors are entered into competition. Past winners of the award include: Jhumpa Lahiri, Pulitzer Prize winner for Interpreter of Maladies; Ha Jin, National Book Award winner for Waiting; Susan Choi, Pulitzer Prize finalist for American Woman; Amitav Ghosh, Booker Prize finalist for Sea of Poppies; Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge, American Book Award winner for The Heat Bird; and Arthur Sze, Pulitzer Prize finalist for Compass Rose; among many others. As the achievements of these writers show, Asian American literature is not just a niche genre, but a central chapter in our nation's literature.
