NURTURE A SANCTUARY SPACE FOR ASIAN AMERICAN WRITERS

For more than a quarter century, the Asian American Writers' Workshop has served as a home, a refuge, and a sanctuary for Asian American writers and readers. Covered by the New York Times, NPR's All Things Considered, and The Wall Street Journal, we are an alternative literary arts space working at the intersection of race, migration, and social justice. We're dedicated to inventing the future of Asian American intellectual culture!

What we do: We run the online magazine The Margins, hold live events every week, and grant fellowships to emerging writers of color. Since 2011, we’ve promised $140,000 to emerging writers, including writers from immigrant and Muslim communities. We host unforgettable events with over 200 writers a year, like Maxine Hong Kingston, Amitav Ghosh, Jiayang Fan, Ted Chiang, Cathy Park Hong, Roxane Gay, Hari Kunzru, Claudia Rankine, Randa Jarrar, and Junot Díaz. We run after-school programs for New York City high school students, and host Asian-language art workshops for elderly Asian immigrants living in public housing. Our Open City magazine tells the story of low-income Asian American New York. As Jhumpa Lahiri writes, "By the time I was in my early twenties, I wanted to write fiction but I was too afraid. I felt that the Asian American Writers' Workshop was a secret door that opened and cared about and supported my work as a writer."

Membership comes with benefits: Join our Fan Club now and you'll get special membership benefits like: A tax-deduction equivalent to your year total donation; a membership keytag; Free admission to regular events; Discounts on workshops; 25% off select books; Voting rights for our Members’ Choice Award; Invitations to members only events; and a general sense of coolness.
