In a rainforest, plants with fenestrated leaves conserve energy and allow for light to pass through to layers below. As artists, understanding principles for lighting ourselves is more than a codified set of universal tactics. Designing the best angles to approach a narrative and the stories we tell about ourselves strengthens our autonomy at every stage of creative process.

This two-part open genre workshop draws from performance strategies to consider how to tell narratives of the self. In the first session, writers will practice techniques for drawing from personal experiences that feel fruitful but not exhibitionist. The power of erasure and slant! In the second session, writers will build on methods of archive and autofiction to develop language for more girlbossy applications: the artist statement and the project description.

Together, these sessions consider how thinking about creative writing and professional writing in tandem can be generative and even fun! Illuminating where the personal seeps into writing as well as the meta/self-reflexive writing about the writing can sharpen a vision for work that is both more particular and more compelling.

Writers will generate new frames of inquiry for considering the scope of current projects as well as draft language for new artist and/or project statements.

Tuition for this workshop is sliding scale $100- $200. If payment does not meet the sliding scale, you will be refunded and asked to re-register.

A Zoom link will be sent to registrants the day of the workshop.
