WORKSHOP: Prototyping Memory, A Game Design Approach To Nonfiction

Saturday, 9/18, Sunday 9/19 | 3 PM – 5:30 PM ET
Online | 2 Sessions | REGISTER HERE!
Sliding Scale $100-$200 | Limited Scholarship Seats Available

This class welcomes everyone regardless of past experience with programming or game design. No previous programming or game development experience needed!

Using interactive fiction can encourage us to reconsider how we use scene and memory in creative nonfiction, and reveal patterns. We will look at work from writers such as Franny Choi and Elissa Washuta, as well as interactive fiction from game creators like Emily Short and Andrew Plotkin

In this workshop, Emperatriz Ung will guide students through using computer programming to reimagine setting, perspective, structure, and more, using Inform 7 (available for free on MacOS, Windows, Linux), a natural-language-based programming language. Students will be asked to download Inform 7 to play some games and poke around before we meet.

Emperatriz Ung is a Chinese-Colombian writer, game designer, and educator from the American Southwest. She works as a narrative designer for mobile games and is a 2021 Kundiman Mentorship Lab Fellow. She has held fellowships at the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and the Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Justice. You can find Emperatriz on Twitter at @mprtrzng.

***The Asian American Writers’ Workshop is a space that seeks to uplift and celebrate BIPOC and queer, trans, and nonbinary folks of color. We ask allies to take a step back and enjoy our programs in another capacity.***
