Join AAWW for the PBS-streaming premiere night of documentary short After All This profiling Margins alumnus, Sarah Thankam Mathews, directed by Oscar-shortlisted filmmaker Andrew Nadkarni and produced by Open City alumnus, Maryam Mir!
After All This (15 minutes) follows Mathews after the success of her debut novel, All This Could Be Different, as she embarks on her second novel, drawing from her adolescence between India and Oman. As Sarah excavates lost place and time, she must contend with the weight of truthful representation and the contradictions within her childhood memories.
Following the screening, Sarah will be in conversation with Andrew Nadkarni, moderated by Maryam Mir. They’ll talk about the process of making their sophomore project, writing across mediums (literary and film), and how they find flow and sustenance when embarking on new creative endeavors.
Film screening and Conversation/Q&A will last around an hour, followed by an informal reception with light refreshments.
Sarah Thankam Mathews is the author of All This Could Be Different, which was shortlisted for the the Discover Prize, the Aspen Words Literary Prize, and 2022 National Book Award in Fiction. Mathews’ debut novel was also a New York Times Editor’s Choice and named a Best Book of the Year by NPR, Vogue, Vulture, Los Angeles Times, TIME, Slate, and Buzzfeed. Mathews grew up between Oman and India, immigrating to the United States at seventeen. She was a Margins Fellow at AAWW.
Andrew Nadkarni is a Oscar-shortlisted filmmaker of Indian heritage whose work excavates diaspora narratives, resilience, and identity. His film, Between Earth & Sky (POV/PBS), won Best Documentary Short at multiple film festivals, earned Critics’ Choice and Cinema Eye nominations, and screened at over 60 festivals before being shortlisted for the 2024 Oscars.
Maryam Mir is an award-winning filmmaker and writer whose work centers belonging, joy and intercultural connection. Her film, Sweet Refuge, played at over 45 festivals, won a Directors Guild of America Jury Award, and was acquired by AMC+ for their Rising AAPI Stars Collection. She curates the “In Pursuit of Light” screening series at the workshop and was a 2019 Open City Fellow at AAWW.
