The Asian American Writers’ Workshop and the Asian American Book Club are teaming up with the Brooklyn Book Festival to host the first annual Asian American BookCon! An official bookend event of the Brooklyn Book Festival, the BookCon will feature a marketplace of publishers, artists, booksellers, and vendors celebrating the diversity of Asian American literature. In addition, the BookCon will feature literary programming composed of three panels that explore a wide range of ideas.
Framing Palestinian Representation in the Media (1pm – 2pm ET)
The first talk will center Palestine and the ethics of representing Palestinian suffering, history, and art in media. How do we talk about Palestine without romanticizing the pain of Palestinians?
Cultural Preservation and Innovation in Food Writing (3pm – 4pm ET)
In recent years, food writing has become both a tool for laying claim to one’s cultural heritage and an important part of diasporic cultural preservation. What can food writing – in the form of cookbooks, blogs, and fiction – tell us about the present state of diasporic Asian communities?
Global Phenomena: K-pop and Bollywood (5pm – 6pm ET)
K-pop and Bollywood are two of Asia’s most far reaching, influential, and lucrative cultural phenomena. This talk will focus on the evolution of global Asian culture and what it means for Asian American artists who constantly straddle the hyphen between their various cultural backgrounds.
The BookCon is free and open to the public.
