This January, the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and London-based writer April Yee present a reading with two of the UK’s leading poets: Will Harris (RENDANG) and Romalyn Ante (Antiemetic for Homesickness). This vibrant reading will incorporate visual objects and oral choruses to meet the complexities of communicating beyond place and language. Following their reading, Will and Romalyn will examine how Asian identity is constructed outside of the United States and discuss the ways British colonialism and capitalism continue to shape ideas of what and who belongs. This weekend discussion will be spirited by both ancestors and libations (BYOB).

ROMALYN ANTE (b. 1989) grew up in Batangas, Philippines. She migrated to the UK when she was 16 years old. She is a West Midland-based poet and co-founding editor of harana poetry. She is also a poetry editor at Ambit magazine. Romalyn is Poetry Ambassadors 2021 mentor. She was appointed Poet-in-Residence at Shakespeare Birthplace Trust / Hosking Houses Trust in 2019. She is the first East-Asian to win the international prizes Poetry London (2018) judged by Kwame Dawes and Manchester Poetry Prize (2017). Her debut collection is Antiemetic for Homesickness (Chatto & Windus). She currently works full time as a specialist nurse practitioner, assessing and providing psychotherapeutic treatments to children and young people.

WILL HARRIS is a London-based writer of Chinese Indonesian and British heritage. He has had work published in the LRB, Poetry Daily, The New Republic, and SPAM. He co-edited the Spring 2020 issue of The Poetry Review with Mary Jean Chan. His first full poetry book, RENDANG, is published by Granta in the UK and by Wesleyan in the US. It was selected as a Poetry Book Society Choice, won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection, and is shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize 2021.

APRIL YEE is a writer and literary translator with work in Ambit, Entropy, and Newsweek. A Harvard History & Literature graduate, she won funding from the Society of Environmental Journalists, moderated CEO panels in Asia and the Middle East, and reported in more than a dozen countries at sites ranging from Iraqi oil fields to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In London she reads for Liminal Transit Review and serves on the Refugee Journalism Project at University of the Arts London. Twitter: @aprilyee
