Independent publishing has historically been a way for marginalized writers to publish to and for each other. In recent years, paid email newsletters have emerged as new ways to publish to each other while also earning a sustainable income. Unfortunately, these new platforms are not always ethically aligned with marginalized writers.
This workshop will empower you to build your own self-hosted email newsletter with paid subscription capability. Over the course of four evening sessions, you will be guided step-by-step by an experienced writer and technologist with the goal of taking control of your work and audience.
Attendees must be comfortable using or learning to use command-line tools and must buy a custom domain before the first class (such as iwantmyname, Namecheap, etc). Attendees should leave this event with their own working email newsletter built on an open-source CMS, Ghost, as well as DigitalOcean, MailGun, and Stripe.
Former AAWW Margins Fellow Yanyi is the author of THE READING, a creative writing advice column, which has grown to 2000+ subscribers in less than a year. In addition to running his own newsletter, he’s the author of two collections, THE YEAR OF BLUE WATER (Yale 2019) and the forthcoming DREAM OF THE DIVIDED FIELD (One World 2022). Before leaving to write full-time, he worked as a frontend engineer for 6 years in the tech industry. He migrated his newsletter to an independent stack on Ghost in March 2021.
