Agha Shahid Ali

Agha Shahid Ali was a Kashmiri American poet and translator. Born in New Delhi in 1949, he attended the University of Kashmir and Hindu College, University of Delhi. In 1976, Ali immigrated to the United States and received a PhD in English from Pennsylvania State University in 1984 and an MFA from the University of Arizona in 1985. He published nine poetry collections and translated a collection of work by the Urdu poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Ali taught at several universities, including Hamilton College, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Warren Wilson College, and the University of Utah. He died of brain cancer in 2001.
