Ana T. Calixto was a writer from the Bikol region. We have no extant verifiable biological data on her. Merito B. Espinas anthologized her osipon “Maimon” in Bikol Voices Anthology (1983). The anthology does not provide Calixto’s hometown but indicates that Calixto resided for many years in Bacacay, Albay. Her last extant published osipon, “Romansa nin mga Puso” (1956), was published in the magazine Bicolandia but printed “Naga City” under her byline. Maria Lilia F. Realubit included Calixto’s osipons in her survey of Bikol literature in Bikols of the Philippines (1983). There is no mention here of Calixto’s hometown. Realubit identified a minimum of twenty-four osipons published by Calixto but of these only nineteen are extant. Eighteen of these were published in Bikolana. Based on the dates of the osipons’ publication, Calixto wrote and published all her osipons within a year, from June 1955 to April 1956. Calixto’s osipons mark the period’s struggle between the various Philippine ethnic groups and the increasing intensity and reach of Tagalog nationalization.
