Since 1991, the Asian American Writers’ Workshop has nurtured community and connection through writing workshops. Workshops are one of the most important ways we build a writing community to make each other sharper and braver writers.

CreateNow Workshops in NYC Public High Schools
AAWW’s arts education and outreach program, CreateNow, is an interactive creative writing & storytelling workshop program offered to teens at high schools throughout New York City. Students participate in a series of 20 weekly after-school workshops to gain writing and story-telling skills while having an opportunity to work closely with established writers of color, including graphic novelists, journalists, and poets.
The program culminates in a final reading at AAWW’s performance space in Chelsea and the publication of a zine with student work. Past workshops at Hunter College High School, Boerum Hill School of International Studies, and Lower East Side Prep have inspired students to write graphic novels and provocative poetry on a wide variety of themes from identity, homeland, immigration, translation, love, and more.
CreateNow Workshops in Senior Centers
Since 2017, we have brought multi-lingual teaching artists and community art programs to Hudson Guild Community Center, Homecrest Community Services, Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, and Henry Street Settlement Center. Our teaching artists introduce interactive storytelling workshops designed to inspire creativity and learning among elders, while using the arts to foster a sense of community among culturally diverse immigrants.
