Join Kundiman & the Asian American Writers’ Workshop as we celebrate the launch of Adeeba Shahid Talukder’s latest collection, Shahr-e-jaanaan: The City of the Beloved published by Tupelo Press & winner of the Kundiman Poetry Prize. Pakistani American poet, singer, & translator of Urdu & Persian poetry, Talukder addresses romance within archetypes & employs metaphor illustrate a shifting mental state. Tupelo Press writes, “Cycling between delirious grandeur & wretched despair, she is torn between two selves– the pitiable lover continually rejected, & the cruel, unattainable beloved comparable in her exaltation to a god.” Talukder will be joined by David Hornibrook, Nkosi Nkululeko, & Zeeshan Pathan.

Adeeba Shahid Talukder is a Pakistani American poet, singer, and translator of Urdu and Persian poetry. She is the author of What Is Not Beautiful (Glass Poetry Press, 2018) and her book Shahr-e-jaanaan: The City of the Beloved, forthcoming through Tupelo Press, is a winner of the Kundiman Poetry Prize.

David Hornibrook is the author of Night Manual (Wayne State University Press), winner of the 2019 Moveen Prize in Poetry granted by The Lynch & Sons Fund for the Arts. David’s work was also awarded a 2014 Pushcart Prize and has appeared in a variety of places including Third Coast, Thrush Poetry Journal, PANK, Foundry, and The Baltimore Review. He holds an MFA in creative writing from the Helen Zell Writer’s Program at the University of Michigan.

Nkosi Nkululeko, a writer, chess and music instructor from Harlem, is a 2017 Poets House fellow. His poetry can be found in Callaloo, Michigan Quarterly Review, The Offing, Ploughshares, and elsewhere. Nkosi is a recipient of the 2019 Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts fellowship and is the winner of the 2018 Page Davidson Clayton Prize for Emerging Poets. His poem “Skin Deep,” formerly published by The Adroit Journal, is included in The Best American Poetry 2018 anthology.

Zeeshan Pathan is the author of The Minister of Disturbances (Diode Editions, 2020). He attended Washington University in Saint Louis as a Kenneth E. Hudson Scholar where he studied poetry with Mary Jo Bang, Carl Phillips, and Fatemeh Keshavarz. He speaks several languages and translates from Urdu, Turkish, & Persian. At Columbia University, he received a Fellowship to study poetry at the graduate level and he completed his M.F.A. under Lucie Brock-Broido. His poetry has been featured in Tarpaulin Sky Press Magazine and in an anthology of contemporary American Muslim writings by Red Hen Press.
