عید است و پیش از صبحدم مژده به خمار آمده
بر چرخ دوش از جام جم یک نیمه دیدار آمده
عید آمد از خلد برین، شد شٔ روی زمین
هان ماه نو طغراش بین امروز در کار آمده
کرده در آن خرم فضا صید گوزنان چند جا
شاخ گوزن اندر هوا اینک نگونسار آمده
پرچم ز شب پرداخته، مه طاس پرچم ساخته
بیرق ز صبح افراخته روزش سپهدار آمده
بر چرخ بگشاده کمین، داغش نهاده بر سرین
هان عین عید اینک ببین بر چرخ دوار آمده
پی گم کنان سی شب دوان، از چشم قرایان نهان
دزدیدهq در کوی مغان نزدیک خمار آمده
ساقی صنم پیکر شده، باده صلیب آور شده
قندیل ازو ساغر شده، تسبیح زنار آمده
می عاشقآسا زرد به، همرنگ اهل درد به
درد صفا پرورد به تلخ شکربار آمده
می آفتاب زرفشان، جان بلورش آسمان
مشرق کف ساقیش دان مغرب لب یار آمده
در ساغر صهبا نگر، در کشتی آن دریا نگر
بر خشکتر صحرا نگر کشتی به رفتار آمده

It’s the Fitr Eve. Wine-sellers have already got the gospel just before the sun’s rise:
“Jamshid’s Goblet appeared in half on last night’s rolling skies.”

Here comes Eve! Governor by appointment from Her majesty, Paradise:
Look at the insignia at the top of her order: the new crescent Moon!

She’s been hunting deer in that fresh meadow for a long time:
Look at the hanging antlers flashing in the air from time to time.

With a flagpole of night, with a flag-hook of the Moon—
Dawn’s emblem on the flag: Here comes the Day, the standard-bearer!

She ambushes the sky, burns a brand on its hip:
Look at the brand! The letter ع marks Eve against the rotating sky.

Runaway from the abstainers for thirty days, Eve covers her
tracks. She secretly visits the wine-seller at the Magian tavern.

Here comes the idol-shaped saqi. Wine brings forth the cross.
Wine is drunk from candelabras by drinkers wearing rosaries around their necks.

Wine should be pale like the lover’s face. Yellow, the color of suffering:
it should be mature and clear, bitter but sweetened with sugar.

Behold wine—the gold-pouring sun, in the crystal cup-sky,
rising from the saqi’s hand, setting on my beloved’s lips.

Behold the wine in the goblet, see the sea drifting from a ship—
Behold the ship marching forth across a moist-dry Sahara.
